TWELVE SHORTS GENERATED SHOT BY SHOT, NOBODY IN FRAME. A TRAILER THAT CARRIES THE BROADCAST. NO VOICE OF HIS IS EVER GENERATED.

THE TRAILER · 1:41 · WITH SOUND · GENERATED SHOTS CUT AGAINST THE BROADCAST OF JUNE 18, 2003
THE TRAILER CARRIES THE BROADCAST. It cuts generated shots against the interview from his TechTV appearance of 18 June 2003 — him, on camera, in his own voice, from the broadcast, which the project holds the rights to. It is not a re-enactment, a look-alike or a synthetic likeness, and nothing in it is synthetic speech. What is generated in it is the rest: the rooms, the clocks, the light.
WHAT IS NEVER DONE. No voice of his is generated, ever: where he speaks, it is the recording. No photograph of him is used as an avatar, and no synthetic likeness of him is made. Where he is quoted in text, it comes from the store, with its source and its date. Likeness and estate questions go to counsel, and nothing here presumes their answer.
THE SHORTS ARE GENERATED, ALL OF THEM. Every shot in the twelve below comes from a written prompt: no archive footage, no photograph, nobody in frame at all, and nothing in frame legible, so no shot dates itself or claims a source. They are silent on purpose — the ambience a generator invents does not cut together, and a generated voice is out of the question here.

THE TWELVE SHORTS

Vertical, about six seconds each, silent. Each carries one line on a plate in the site's own grammar and the end card on the tail. They go out on x.com/generayai.

THE ARCHIVEWise people call me a genius. Stupid and evil people call me crazy.
GENE RAY, TIMECUBE.COM, c. 2004

WHOSE WORDS. A line marked HIS WORDS is quoted byte for byte from the store, with the source and the date on the plate. A line marked THE MACHINE’S was written by Gene Ray AI and is labeled that way on the plate, in the post, and here. The distinction is never left to the viewer to work out.

THE TRAILER, SHOT BY SHOT

Dawn over a flat horizon · four clocks on a bare wall, each at a different time · window light sweeping a floor · an empty lecture hall · an attic box of yellowed paper · a Florida room cut into four bars of light · a CRT alone in the dark · a wall of static · a blank flyer on a pole · a clock face, close · dust in a shaft of sun · Earth with the terminator across it · a desk globe, half in shadow · a wireframe cube with a wireframe Earth inside it · the empty interview chair · a photocopier · a sundial, its shadow going the whole way round · a lens over a page · four sunrises at once · the DAY cube coming to life on paper · the card. Twenty generated shots, each used once, cut against eight windows of the 2003 interview — 29 cuts in all. An earlier all-generated cut, 55 seconds and silent, uses the first fourteen of them and no interview at all; it is kept as the version with nothing in it but generated picture. The twelve shorts below share no footage with either: they are twelve vertical shots generated for that purpose alone.
